The RC Starz U15 Silver squad went 10-0-1 during a two-tournament trip to Colorado last week, claiming championships in the DU Pioneers Challenge in Denver and the Adrenaline MS/Youth Shootout in Colorado Springs.
The team, made up mostly of players headed to San Diego high schools Torrey Pines, Cathedral Catholic, Bishops and Carlsbad, opened the DU Pioneers Challenge on Thursday, July 14, going 3-0 in pool play. The team — which also included one player headed to Los Angeles Loyola and one to Newport Beach Corona Del Mar — beat Utah Prime 9-3, Denver Elite 9-7 and True Idaho 11-5.
In Friday’s semifinals, RC beat True Idaho again, this time 11-0, then beat Denver Elite 10-5 for the championship.
Saturday, RC Starz U15 went 3-0-1 in pool play, posting wins over Thunderbolts 10-1 and Colorado Wild 8-4 before finishing tied 8-8 with Utah Prime and beating Denver Elite for the third time in three days, 8-2.
Sunday, the team beat Texas United 5-3 in the semifinals before needing overtime to down Portland’s Junior Black Rhinos 8-7 in the title game.
The RC Starz U15 squad — coached by Greg Kirk (Torrey Pines defensive coordinator), Spencer Schmidt (Syracuse ’18 midfielder) and Dave O’Neil (Santa Fe Middle School) — outscored its opponents 97-45 in 11 tournament games over four days.
