A 5-1 burst in the third quarter helped carry No. 2 Palos Verdes to a 13-7 win over No. 4 Peninsula on Wednesday, forging a tie atop the Bay League standings. Both teams are 4-1 in league and finish up Friday. Barring upsets, they will share the league title.
Aidan Westley (3g, 3a) and Austin Lowi (5g, 1a) led the Sea Kings‘ offense, with Jake Nolls (2g) Stanton Gilbertson (2g, 1a) and Mikey Booth (1g) scoring, as well. David McCann made 16 saves in goal, but the difference might have been at the faceoff dot, where Zack Lozzi won 15 of 19 draws.
Peninsula (14-2, 4-1) led 2-1 after one quarter, and the score was tied 5-5 at halftime before Palos Verdes (12-5, 4-1) pulled away.
“They’re a very good team,” PV coach Jimmy Borell said via text message. “Lance [Plonski] is unreal in cage.”
Plonski, a senior, scored a goal himself Wednesday (see video above), going coast to coast and beating McCann from the doorstep.
Mira Costa 9, Redondo Union 8
No. 10 Mira Costa trailed Redondo Union 4-3 at halftime, and the game was tied 8-8 in the final minute. But Mustangs sophomore Casey Bonner scored his second goals of the game with 38 seconds left to lift Costa (9-5, 1-4) to a 9-8 win, its first in Bay League play.
In addition to Bonner’s two goals, the Mustangs got three second-half goals from Hayden Frye. Nick Coons finished with two goals, and Zane Crandall and Ryan Gustafson each scored one.
Redondo (6-9, 1-4) was led by junior Preston Faecher’s three goals. Brad Clark scored two, and Adam Mazor, John Langford and Jake Wolf each scored one.
Costa wraps up its regular season Friday night at home against Palos Verdes, while Redondo plays at Peninsula on Friday afternoon.
