Preview: No. 9 Oaks Christian Lions

The Oaks Christian Lions are coming off the best season in the program’s history, having won 10 games, including a 14-13 win over neighborhood rival Westlake, and defeated Thacher in the first round for the program’s first playoff victory.

Wednesday, Oaks opened its 2017 season with a 13-1 win over Dos Pueblos behind four goals and two assists from Cort Rogers and three goals each from Lorenzo Santor and Danny Redell. Carson Campbell, Ronny Redell and Cade Rogers each scored one goal, and Mike Spaeth was credited with an assist.

Here is a look at the 2017 Oaks Christian Lions, with thanks to Coach Jeremy Sieverts and the team for providing the video.

Oaks Christian Lions

2016 Record: 10-8 overall; 6-4 Marmonte League. No. 7 seed in playoffs; lost to Loyola in second round.
2017 Preseason Ranking: No. 9 in the coaches poll.
Coaching Staff: Jeremy Sieverts, head coach, second year.

Players to Watch: Junior attack Cort Rogers (first-team all-Marmonte); senior attack Lorenzo Santor; senior middie Danny Redell; junior goalie James Vils.

Schedule Highlights: March 7 vs. Oak Park; March 10 at Sierra Canyon; March 22 at Thousand Oaks; March 24 at Agoura; March 31 at Newbury Park; April 5 vs. Westlake; April 7 vs. Thousand Oaks; April 10 at Mater Dei; April 11 at JSerra; April 19 vs. Agoura; April 26 vs. Newbury Park; April 28 at Westlake.

Outlook: The Marmonte League is never easy, but the Lions return a number of scoring threats from a year ago, when the team averaged 9.6 goals per game. The challenge for Oaks Christian might come on defense. Junior goalie James Vils is back, but Division I recruits Kaveh Torabian and Cole Eisel have graduated and leave big shoes to fill. Oaks Christian’s roster is young, but there is a lot of talent for Sieverts to work with.

Special thanks to the Oaks Christian program for providing the video.
