Preview: Boys County Title Game

What: US Lacrosse Orange County Championship Game

Teams: #1 Corona del Mar (22-0) vs. #3 San Clemente (15-6)

When: Wednesday, May 9, 2012, 7:30 p.m. at Dana Hills HS, Dana Point, CA

Coaches: CdM: GW Mix; San Clemente: Glen Miles

About CdM: The undefeated Sea Kings are led by senior midielder Michael Keasey (No. 9), senior goalkeeper Michael Ortlieb (No. 1) and junior attackman Casey Mix (No. 10). Both Keasey and Ortlieb have signed to play for Division I teams next year–Keasey is headed to Yale, Ortlieb is off for Holy Cross–and the duo provides strength on both ends of the field for Coach Mix. The Sea Kings have only had five games in which they were threatened–the 7-5 win over Foothill in the semifinals is the closest game of the season. They rolled through the Pacific Coast league this season, and went 3-0 during a Spring Break trip to the St. Ignatius Tournament that resulted in wins over Menlo School, Marin Catholic and Bellarmine. Also keep your eyes on senior attackman Hunter Molnar (No. 24) and Ortlieb’s younger brother, Jack (N0. 9), on attack. Senior Connor Cruse anchors the defense.

About San Clemente: Glen Miles’ Tritons played the second toughest schedule in CIF Southern Section–only Foothill played a tougher schedule–and had wins over Foothill, St. Margaret’s, Los Alamitos and swept El Toro. SC finished second in South Coast to Tesoro, who won two 10-9 OT games over San Clemente. The Tritons have balanced scoring–the attack trio of senior Jay Kassity (No. 15), junior Robbie Burns (No. 18) and sophomore Peyton Garrett (No. 21) all have scored 90 points or more this season. Kassity has signed to play at Whittier next season. Senior midfielder Aaron Self (No. 13) is among the top faceoff men in the county, while the defense is anchored by longpole midfielder sophomore Stone Sims (No. 10) and defensemen David Anthony (No. 33) and Brennan O’Toole (No. 11). SC also went to SF for Spring Break to play in the St. Ignatius tourney and played the host team tough, losing 9-6 to the state’s top-ranked team while defeating Marin Catholic and Redwood.

What’s at stake? The County Championship and a berth in Saturday’s CIF Southern Section final against the top team from Los Angeles. Game time is 7 p.m. at Mission Viejo HS.
