University high school freshman Phat Nguyen has been named the Athlete’s Choices Workhorse of the Week. Nguyen who just started playing lacrosse last month was nominated by his head coach Andreas Gaynor. Gaynor has been impressed by the Nguyen’s work ethic and ability to absorb the skills necessary to play competitively on the high school level.
“He has only played for a month, but he is a sponge at practice,” Gaynor said. “He is always asking how things are done. When I show him the techniques he immediately practices, then tries to apply them.”
The freshman athlete played football at University during the fall as a wide receiver and cornerback for the school’s frosh team. While practicing with his older sister who plays for the girls’ lacrosse team at the school, Nguyen decided to try out for the boys’ team and found the sport makes him a better athlete.
While the relationship is just beginning, Nguyen could not be happier to be in Gaynor’s program and looks to him as a role model. In just a month’s time, he feels his skills have gotten better and better.
“(Gaynor) has really taught me a lot of things about the sport and got me started to like lacrosse,” Nguyen said via email. “He is also my first lacrosse coach, so I have the rest of my high school years with him and I hope that I can get to learn more from him and about him.”
University played a scrimmage against Norco on Saturday and will open their regular season Monday against Damien.
