The first day of the Palm Desert Lax Classic is in the books. What started out as a morning full of sunshine ended with an evening of rain which only intensified the final games of the night. Here’s our breakdown of where some of the teams stand after day one.
Chief of Strings vs. San Clemente
Chief of Strings is a team built to compete around a Loyola High School (Los Angeles) core. San Clemente is purely a San Clemente High School (Orange County) getting ready to compete for a CIF championship this spring. They proved that they are ready to give reigning Southern Section champs St. Margaret’s Episcopal a run for their money.
Both teams battled throughout the entirety of the game. It was clear that as the game wore on, San Clemente did start to get the regular season rhythm back but it wouldn’t be enough. After early rips from Austin Streeter and Peyton Garrett, Chief of Strings grappled back some momentum with a couple 12 yard bounce shots that no one saw coming. Both Streeter and Garrett finished with 3 goal games.
Chief of Strings ended up scrapping their way to the lead by their desperation outside shots that took unpredictable bounces on a relatively hard, soccer cleat packed surface. With a minute left, San Clemente turned a solid possession into a game tying goal to make it 8-8. But with 30 seconds left, Chief of Strings got an open look from eight and buried it: Chief of Strings in dramatic fashion 9-8 for the first win of the tournament’s U-19 Division
Brady’s Bunch Believe vs. Zip It
The roars coming from afar tore at my inner laxer and drove me to swiftly jog-sprint to the upper fields to scope the action. Zip It had just put in their second goal unanswered goal and was looking to upset the program of the tournament (Brady’s Bunch fielded ten teams to fill the five divisions of the tourney)
During Brady’s Bunch handling of Flyers (14-0), the boys played with disciplined intensity that transcended their age. It should have been a no brainer that their passion would only multiply as their competition increased but the passion that Brady’s brought and Zip It returned still left me pleasantly surprised.
The game was much closer than the final score and the tempo made us feel like we were already watching Sunday’s Championship game. After a relatively close first three quarters of the game Brady’s Bunch Believe pulled away to win 11-7
DH vs. San Clemente
DH is JSerra Catholic’s club team, while the SC Wave is San Clemente High Schools. Both teams will be in the fight for OC supremacy this spring, and both teams are in Palm Desert with their high school teams for the early season warm up. This matchup in a steady drizzle ended up being a defensive battle, as early goals by SC’s Torin Alm and DH’s Jimmy Yanes got the teams started.
SC sophomore defenseman Caleb Bozarth put SC up 2-1 on a full-field burst capped with a sizzling bouncer, but JSerra/DH answered as senior Mitch Kingsley scored on a nice “question mark” move driving right handed from behind the cage then scoring with his left past SC’s sophomore keeper Austin Boyer.
DH went ahead 3-2 on a pretty rip by junior Logan Olmstead, but with just over a minute left in the game, SC”s Peyton Garrett scored on a quick shot in the slot off an Alm feed to tie the game and force overtime.
After winning the faceoff, DH’s Yuta Murata drove down the left flank, spun and scored in the upper shelf to notch the 4-3 win and even DH’s record on the day at 1-1. SC dropped to 0-2 having suffered two OT losses on the day.
We’ll have Day 2 coverage as well as a focus on Crush Black (Foothill’s U-19 club team) and OC Friars (Servite’s U-19 club team).
