Mater Dei Girls’ Lacrosse Start 2017 at No. 1

With five Division 1 bound seniors returning from last year’s undefeated US Lacrosse Southern Section champions, the Mater Dei Monarch were voted No. 1 in the US Lacrosse/MaxLaxOC preseason .  The Monarchs received 8 first-place votes on the 10 ballots cast.  Foothill and Tesoro shared the other two first place votes.

Last year Mater Dei finished 21-0 overall.  The Monarchs edged Foothill 6-5 in the OC championship game and then handily defeated Oak Park 13-4 to claim the Southern Section Championship.

Rounding out the Top 5 are  Foothill, St. Margaret’s, Corona del Mar and Tesoro.

Foothill, the 2015 Southern Section Champions, finished last season with a 13-9 record. The Knights were edged by Mater Dei 6-5 in the OC championship game.

St. Margaret’s cruised through the regular season last year with only one loss but were upset in the second round of the playoffs by last year’s Cinderella team Newport Harbor.

CdM reached the OC semi-finals last season before becoming one of Mater Dei’s 21 victims. The Sea Queens finished with a 16-3 overall record.

Tesoro finished 2016 with a 17-3 record.  The Titans were knocked out of the playoffs in the second round by CdM.

Trabuco Hills, Newport Harbor, San Juan Hills, Beckman, and Santa Margarita round out the Top 10.
