Last year’s Open Division Championship game was one for the history books, with Poway High School emerging victorious over Torrey Pines by a score of 9-8. This year, Poway will have the chance to repeat while Torrey will be able to finish what they couldn’t last year. Whatever the outcome, this year’s San Diego Open Division Championship is sure to have plenty of fireworks.
Zach Burke, in his fourth year of coaching at Poway High School, has led the Titans to a 17-3 record this season including wins over La Costa Canyon and Orange County contender Foothill High School.
The Titans boast a deep rosterfull of scoring threats. Junior captain Nick Beeson will lead the team from the attack position. A Bryant commit, Beeson will quarterback the Titan’s offense from down low. Seniors Cole Landolt and Jake Landon will join Beeson on attack. Torrey Pines’ defensive task does not get any easier in the midfield, that’s where senior captain Zach Hodge will be operating. The Cleveland State Commit is a shoulder-down head-up dodger who is sure to draw a slide. When Torrey Pines does make a defensive stop and looks to clear the ball, they will have to deal with LSM Jake Fiske. The reigning CIF Player of the Year and Bryant commit excels at causing havoc between the restraining lines, Fiske is also an offensive threat who has no conscience when shooting the ball in transition. On the other end of the field, senior captain Tony Chassen will lead the defense.
Occupying the other sideline are the Torrey Pines Falcons. Led by Jono Zissi the Falcons have a record of 19-2 and statement wins over Southern Section champion Loyola, OC champion Corona del Mar, and an early season victory over Poway.
Josh Sherman, an Ohio Wesleyan commit, will lead the attack unit for Torrey. Joining him low are Aldrick Van der Heyde and Marc Lefferdink. Guarding the Falcons from the midfield is where things get especially tricky as the depth of the Falcons is a true strength. Senior captain Ara Suhadolnik (Umass) leads the Falcons midfield that features Brendan Egan (Bucknell), Spencer Small (Syracuse), Shayne Grant, (Richmond), Zach Freidland (Georgetown). Titans coach Zach Burke will have a true challenge deciding who to pole, and who the short stick defensive middies will habe to cover. Taking faceoffs for the Falcons will be Spencer Grant (Michigan) who has been dominant all season long. Team captain, Under Armour All American, and Harvard committed LSM Beau Botkiss will be on the wings during faceoffs and likely guarding the Titan’s Hodge in settled situations. On defense, Luke Talman (Babson), accompanied by Evan Egan (North Carolina) and Caden Wolfson (Air Force) will do everything they can to limit shots and make the night a little easier for goalie Max McGuire (Fairfield).
Whatever the outcome, it is sure to be a great game. Good Luck to both teams. If you can’t make it out to the game, you can watch the live stream right here at MaxLaxSD.com. Just follow this link: Open Division Live Stream.
