Despite getting edged 16-15 by Foothill in round 2 of the playoffs, the Eagles finished 2017 on a roll. After struggling to a 2-5 start, the Eagles cranked up an offense that averaged 15 goals per game and won 12 of their 14 final games with a potent offense leading the way. Much of that offensive production returns this season as new coach Kirstyn Atkinson and the Eagles try to advance even further into the playoffs this year.
There is no question that Santa Margarita will miss Erin DiBernardo (59 goals, 22 assists) who is now at Arizona State and Bella Martinez (34 goals, 22 assists). The good news though is that five of the top seven scorers, including leading scorer Katelyn Murphy (68 goals, 19 assists), are back in 2018. In addition to Murphy, senior Aidan Pike (46 goals, 22 assists), senior Sidney Ruiz (24 goals, 19 assists), senior Maddie Bush (19 goals, 6 assists), and sophomore Caylee Harrison (12 goals, 2 assists) are all back for another bite of the apple. Murphy, Pike, Bush, and Harrison are all on the All-County Watch List.
Senior midfielder Kendal Orantia, another Watch List candidate, and senior goalie Victoria Hoffman will lead an experienced defensive unit.
The Eagles kick off the season on Saturday when they travel to Dana Hills.
