After going 10-7 in the regular season last year with signature wins against Foothill and Newport Harbor, Tesoro’s season ended with a first-round playoff loss against Corona Del Mar.
Second-year coach Lauren Ciccomascolo will try to lead the Titans deeper into the playoffs this year. To do that she will have to find a way to make up for the graduation losses of last year’s top two scorers, Emma Roberson (54 goals, 10 assists) and Katelin Martinez (27 goals, 32 assists).
The good news is that a group of seasoned seniors are ready to step and fill the void. Captains Brynne Peak, Alex Catanzariti, Leah Olsen, Abby Schaff, and Hannah Maurer have all played varsity since their freshman year. Catanzariti, Maurer, and Peak with a combined 93 points last season are proven scorers.
Olsen and Schaff will take the lead on the defensive end of the field. The two-second Team All-League performers represent Tesoro’s last two Defensive Players of the Year. Olsen was the South Coast League Goalie of the Year and Tesoro’s Defensive POTY in 2016. Last year it was Schaff’s turn to earn Defensive POTY honors.
Once again the Titans will have their work cut out for them with a challenging schedule that is pepper with Top 10 teams. The challenges begin with the first game on March 1 when Tesoro hosts Mater Dei, the two-time defending Southern Section champions.
