Oak Park Girls Earn No. 1 Seed in LA Playoffs

The Oak Park girls, who have reached the US Lacrosse LA title game three consecutive seasons, are the No. 1 seed in the 2016 postseason tournament after leading the US Lacrosse/MaxLaxLA coaches poll from wire to wire.

The Eagles (12-3) were a unanimous No. 1 choice in the initial coaches poll, taken March 20, and they were a unanimous No. 1 in the final coaches poll, taken Saturday. They will face No. 16-seed Palisades (8-4) at home in the first round Tuesday.

Chaminade (15-3), Redondo Union (12-2) and Agoura (12-4) were seeds two, three and four in the 16-team field. Cate (11-1), Birmingham (15-4), Palos Verdes (7-6) and Thousand Oaks (13-4) round out the Top 8 and all will play home games on Tuesday.

Playoff seeds were determined at a coaches meeting Sunday using mathematical power rankings from LaxPower.com, the US Lacrosse/MaxLaxLA coaches poll and criteria such as schedule strength, head-to-head results, etc.

Starting Tuesday, all eyes will be on Oak Park, which is seeking its first LA championship after three consecutive appearancs in the title game. The Eagles lost to Agoura in 2013 and 2014 — the latter in overtime — and to Redondo last season.

Oak Park went 8-0 against LA teams this season, winning by an average score of 17-5. The Eagles beat No. 2 seed Chaminade 13-4, No. 3 seed Redondo 15-5 and No. 4 seed Agoura 19-6.

As high-scoring as Oak Park is, though, it’s the defense that impresses. The Eagles, anchored by senior Meggie Sheehan (St. Mary’s) in goal, allowed only 7.2 goals per game this season, and no LA team scored more than six.
