The No. 2 Oak Park Eagles opened defense of their US Lacrosse Southern Section North title at home against the Regents from La Reina on Tuesday and came away with a 14-7 victory.
Senior captain Isabelle Campbell (5g, 1a, 5 draw controls) and sophomores Kathy Kaschalk (4g) and Erin Dotson (1g, 1a, 5 draw controls and 3 ground balls) led the Eagles’ offense. Oak Park led 8-2 at halftime.
But the story of the game was the goaltending by both teams. It was a showdown between two of the best in the North. Cameron Mendez of La Reina made 18 saves, and each one was more impressive than the next. Oak Park’s Alexis Robinson made 10 saves and matched Mendez save for save in what was highlight reel performance by each of them. They truly put on a show.
The starting defensive unit for the Eagles was relentless as junior Harper Wayne, sophomores Maddie Suwara and Courtney Mueting and freshman Riley de Varennes held the Regents to two goals in the first half.
One goal each from Graeson Campbell, Suwara, Livi Fagnani and Yael Kaufman rounded out the Oak Park scoring.
The Regents scoring was provided by Sam Gajda and Sarah Mendez with two goals each, and Rachel Lee, Clara Church and Genevieve Emanuel with one goal apiece.
