Mira Costa, ranked No. 9 in the Week 1 coaches poll, pushed its record to 4-0 Friday night with a 13-6 road win at Culver City.
While the Centaurs have historically been overmatched by Mira Costa, they came out strong on this night and actually took a 1-0 lead. However, Costa quickly recovered and had a 3-1 lead after one quarter, 7-2 after two and 8-3 after three.
“The first six Mustang goals were assisted, and that is a direct result of the new offense working well,” coach Aaron Karsh said.
Sam Dunbar led the Mustangs with three goals and three assists, while fellow attack Joe Rosenberg had a hat-trick and two assists. Hayden Frye had four goals and was the beneficiary of a number of nice passes from his teammates.
“We wanted to run our offense and defense a certain way and did not completely accomplish that task, but we’re still glad to get the win and happy to be undefeated,” junior co-captain Jack Gibbons said.
It should be noted that while they came out on the losing side, the Culver City program is much improved. The Centaurs dropped to 1-5 on the season but have played a tough schedule already, losing previously to No. 3 Harvard Westlake, No. 12 Redondo Union and No. 4 Westlake.
Alex Mora led the Centaurs with three goals, and Christian Trice, Devyn Roche Willis and Nick Vu each scored one. Senior middie Elliot Stanger assisted on all six Culver City goals.
