Bobby Springer won 21 of 24 face offs (87.5% ) to lead No. 3 St. Margaret’s to an 18-4 win over No. 10 Los Alamitos on Wednesday. The Tartans were led by its first midfield unit of Riley Chester (4g, 2a), Matt Groeninger (4g, 2a) and Will Stahl (4g, 1a) who each scored 4 goals.
SMES dominated the game but started a little slow leading only 3-1 after first quarter. The lead was expanded to 8-2 at the half before SMES outscored Los Al 6-0 in the third to 14-2 at the end of the third quarter. The Tartans outshot Los Al 41-11.
Defensively, Halen Goveia helped fill the gap left by Shane Dzwilewski’s absence with a standout performance in his 1 v 1 matchup to cool off a Los Al offense that had been sizzling in it’s last few games. Very strong on approaches and fought for topside all night.
