The Lions have advanced a little deeper into the playoffs every year in the Kyle Harrison era. Last season they made it to the Southern Section finals, before bowing out to Foothill in a 12-8 dogfight. Will this be the year that JSerra busts through and hoists a championship trophy? A talented senior group led by six NCAA-bound players has the grit and the experience to do it.
The Lions are a freewheeling bunch who press and attack aggressively on both offense and defense. Senior captains Yuta Murata (Colby College), Logan Olmstead (Colorado Mesa), Jake Schleppy (High Point), and James Yanes (Hofstra) have all been together since their youth lacrosse days. They combine their innate sense of knowing where one another is on the field with athleticism to score in bunches. Big junior attackman Matt Karzak will create matchup challenges throughout the season, and he may be ready for a big year, especially if opposing defenses give too much attention to the four seniors. Senior Midfielder Jackson Russell will also take on increased responsibilities in 2015. The junior FOGO tandem of Austin Shackelford and Logan Carroll will play big roles this year working to keep the time of possession in JSerra’s favor to keep the offense running.
The defense will be led by the talented senior duo of Kennedy Solomon (UMBC) and Nick Georgagi (Colorado Mesa). The two senior captains are athletic and aggresive poles who move well in transition. Junior Cayson Fincher, who transferred from St Margaret’s, will fill the void left by Scotty Barger’s transfer to Trabuco Hills High School. Fincher brings great athleticism and toughness and will be an asset to an already solid defense led by Solomon and Georgagi.
