It took a while for Mira Costa to get on the scoreboard in its season opener Wednesday night against St. Francis, but once the Mustangs found the net for the first time, they broke open what turned into a 15-5 victory over the No. 20 Knights.
St. Francis took a 1-0 lead midway through the first period and kept Mira Costa scoreless for the first eight minutes. But Mustangs senior attack Josh Maruyama tied it at the 3:52 mark, and Mira Costa rattled off 10 more goals in the next 20-plus minutes. The Mustangs led 8-1 at halftime and stretched it 11-1 before St. Francis scored again with 1:51 left in the third period.
Maruyama finished with four goals and four assists to lead Mira Costa’s offensive onslaught, and senior Zach Horowitz scored three goals. Junior middie Max Geoghegan had two goals and an assist, and sophomore Lucas Menendez had a goal and three assists.
St. Francis fell to 1-1 after opening with a 10-5 win over Peninsula on Saturday.
