No. 10 Mira Costa rode a six-goal third quarter, fueled by a number of man-up opportunities, to a 12-5 win over host No. 18 El Segundo on Wednesday.
The Mustangs (4-1) led 3-0 early behind goals from Zach Horowitz, Miles Choromanski and Ryan Gustafson, but the Eagles rallied to tie before Costa senior Nash Hale scored to make it 4-3 at halftime.
The third quarter, though, belonged to Mira Costa, thanks to a number of El Segundo penalties. Gustafson scored three man-up goals to help the Mustangs pull away. They led 10-4 heading into the fourth quarter and weren’t threatened again.
Gustafson (4g) and sophomore Macallan Laver (2g) led the offense for Costa, which still is missing midfielders Zane Crandall and Hayden Frye due to injury.
El Segundo (1-4) got two goals from Rory Cochrane and one each from Christian Martin, Lukas Roscoe and Preston Quashnick. The Eagles played without starting attack Cory Lund and starting middie Daniel Ball.
