Nick Sando Leads Mater Dei over JSerra

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO- Nick Sando’s monster nine-point (6G, 3A) performance paced No. 7 Mater Dei (3-1, 9-3) to a comfortable 19-7 victory over Trinity League rival JSerra (0-3, 1-8). The Monarchs lead the Trinity League with three wins in league play, while the Lions are still winless in league.

JSerra smelled an upset early in the game, taking a 3-2 lead into the second quarter. However, an offensive push brought Mater Dei to a tight 7-5 lead at halftime.  The Monarchs pulled away in the second half, scoring eight goals in the third quarter and four in the fourth.

Outside of Sando’s stellar performance, the Monarchs received strong contributions from Jack Irvin’s sombrero (4G), and Sean Waterman (3G, 3A) and Zach Torres (3G, 1A) respective hat tricks. Zach Johsz (2G, 1A), Michael Delfin (1G) and Richard Eusey (1A) rounded out the scoring output for Mater Dei. Trent Kriha had a strong performance in the second half between the pipes with three saves and two goals allowed.

Joshua Tackaberry notched a hat trick (3G) for JSerra, with Joe Miraglia (2G), Charles Deamon (1G, 1A), Parker Bledsoe (1G) and Lance Brack (1A) also contributing to the Lions offense. As a team, JSerra recorded 16 shots and 13 total ground balls.

The Monarchs will return home Thursday at 5 p.m. in search of an upset over No. 4 Santa Margarita (1-0, 6-3). Meanwhile, JSerra will travel to Anaheim for a match against No. 9 Servite (2-2, 9-4).
