Newport Harbor girls lacrosse started strong in league play, as senior captain Rylie Siegfried took down the opening draw and stormed to the El Dorado cage to stop the clock at 24:48 with the 1-0 lead. But the home squad put up a serious fight, as the teams exchanged clears, rides, goals, and saves over the ensuing fifteen minutes; junior midfielder Sarah Farley scored the first of her hat trick on a smooth drive to tie the game at 3-3 with just under ten minutes to the break. But the Sailors closed the half three goals to one, as sophomore Adena Rothbard netted a free position shot to break the tie, and juniors Heather Roberts and Caitlin Dwyer each scored on sticky-sweet crease rolls.
The second half belonged to the Newport defensive crew of Jordan Rausch, Sophia Riggan, Maxine Aiello, Jill Rosten, Hayden Allen, and Hannah Sanders, which allowed only two goals in the last forty minutes of play—and to the Newport attackers who swarmed the Golden Hawks on the ride. Meanwhile, the Tar offense heated up and rallied for eight goals behind Katie Hendrix and Siegfried, who combined for five late scores to put the victory on ice. Siegfried finished with four goals, an assist, and six draws won. Roberts, Hendrix, and Rothbard each netted two.
