The No. 11 Newport Harbor girls’ lacrosse team travelled Valencia looking to protect their undefeated league record, maintain their grip on first place, and perhaps make a case for Top 10 status. The Sailors achieved their objectives in a well rounded team effort that saw eight different players finding the back of the net in a lopsided 16-2 victory.
Newport Harbor opened scoring in the first minute, as sophomore Adena Rothbard earned the draw control, dodged into the opposing 8M, drew a foul, and netted the ensuing free position shot. From this auspicious beginning, the visiting Sailors never looked back. The Newport defense, anchored by senior captain Jordan Rausch, gave up only six shots on goal, and senior goalie Hannah Sanders had a 67% save average on the night. Rothbard finished the game with four goals, two draw controls, four ground balls, and a takeaway. Senior captain Rylie Siegfried netted four, assisted one, scooped four ground balls, earned four turnovers, and won three draws. Junior captain Katie Hendrix scored two, scooped four, snagged three draws, and had one takeaway. Junior Sarah Farley also had two goals. Junior Heather Roberts and sophomore Lysie Kenney each earned had a goal and an assist. Sophomore Rylee Warmington broke the seal with her first varsity goal off a feed from junior Jessica Woodruff, who had two assists. Senior Nicole Newman also walked off the field with two assists. And junior Caitlin Dwyer chimed in with a goal of her own.
The victory pushed Newport to 5-0 in the Century SE league, leaving the Sailors firmly in control of first place with three league games remaining.
