Costa Mesa – The Newport Harbor girls lacrosse team did what they haven’t done in slightly over 10 years, beat Los Alamitos. The Sailors beat the Griffins 8-5 on Tuesday at Estancia High School, to push their winning streak to six games.
“I think Daisy is a huge part of our team. Her not being in is going to affect our chemistry, our play and everyone’s mentally, seeing one of our strong senior captains go down gets everyone a little shook up,” Los Alamitos coach Sophia Aragon said.
The Sailors started the game out with a 3-0 lead in the first half thanks to goals from Katie Hendrix, Laura Tran and Rothbard. The Griffins started Kelsey McGrath in goal but switched to McKenzie Shean after the Sailors scored their third goal.
The goalie switch worked, as the Sailors only salvaged one goal and took a 4-3 lead into the halftime intermission. The Griffins almost tied it up at 4-4 on a free position goal, but the goal was waived off because the shot came after time expired.
A goal from Victoria Hansen at the 22:59 mark of the second half gave Los Al a share of the lead for the first time. However the Sailors’ defense doused hopes for a comeback by clamping down and shutting down the Griffins until the final seven seconds of the game. During the Los Alamitos scoring drought, the Sailors got two goals from Hendrix and one goal each from Delaney Knipp and Heather Roberts to give the Sailors the lead for good.
“A lot of our girls stepped up including some of them that were playing out of position,” Newport Harbor coach Matt Armstrong said. “It was good to see the whole team coming together to make it work.”
Hendrix led Newport Harbor (9-3) with three goals. Tran added two goals and Rothbard, Roberts and Knipp had one goal apiece. Goalie Jade Rettig had nine saves for the Sailors.
The Sailors’ next game is Thursday against Foothill at Estancia High School at 6:30 p.m. Los Alamitos’ next game is also on Thursday against Beckman at Los Alamitos High School at 5:30 p.m.
