Newport Harbor Girls Dig In Against Valencia

Newport Harbor SailorsValencia fought hard against Newport Harbor and gave the home team a scare. Behind Jenna Fogliasso who posted two goals in the last minute of the first half, the visitors rallied to within one at halftime. And though the Tiger defense held the Sailors to five fewer goals than they had scored in the previous matchup, the second half belonged to the Sailors, who took the win, 8-5. For the Sailors, sophomore midfielder Rylie Siegfried was a bull on the ride, and pulled off another great game against the Tigers, snagging an astounding five draw controls and two ground balls; she added two caused turnovers and a goal for the complete game. Senior captain Cailynn Smethurst kicked and caught ten Valencia shots (67%). Junior attacker Daniela Vazquez added her signature game-winner, and added an insurance goal for good measure, tying senior captain Alex Palmer for the scoring lead with two. Senior exchange student Birgit Drevvatne netted the first of her varsity career.

Up next, league play on April 1: Valencia travels to Yorba Linda, and Newport Harbor visits El Dorado.
