Both El Toro High School and Newport Harbor High School Girls’ Varsity Lacrosse have been strong out of the gates this season. As expected, their St. Patrick’s Day meeting went down to the wire, with the Sailors ending up on top, 9-8. Senior captain Cailynn Smethurst was in form between the pipes, saving 14 of 22 shots on goal (64%). In front of her, the Newport Harbor defense used its entire bench to deal with a Chargers attack led by junior Emily Lackey, who finished with three goals and an assist. For the Sailors, six different sticks contributed, with two goals each coming from Alex Palmer, Daniela Vazquez, and Brittany McCoy.
Up next, on March 19: El Toro faces Mira Costa, and Newport Harbor visits Valencia.
