Aliso Niguel 11
Newport Harbor 6
Newport, March 12 – This last week marked the first regular season meeting between Aliso Niguel and Newport Harbor since 2012. In that match, ANHS won by fifteen goals; however, after two good games between the clubs in Santa Barbara last month, Thursday night was a much-anticipated reunion. Coming into the game, each team knew it would be a battle of rides—and as expected, the home team attacked with their swarming double teams and the visitors responded with their aggressive midfield play. The Wolverines jumped out to an early lead, scoring four goals in the first six minutes of the game. Aliso’s star midfielder, sophomore Emily Grimes, made a strong showing as she put away four of the Wolverine’s eleven. For the Sailors, it was once again a story of balance. Six different players found the back of the cage: Kim Comet, Brittany McCoy, Katie Hendrix, Emily Lukosky, Daniela Vazquez, and Rylie Siegfried. The team also combined for three dramatic shots off the crossbar and post. Vazquez scooped four ground balls, and Siegfried caused three turnovers.
Next up: Aliso Niguel welcomes Mater Dei on Monday, March 16; Newport hosts Mission Viejo on Tuesday, March 17.
