Newport Harbor Boys Lacrosse 2021 Preview

The Newport Harbor boys lacrosse team enter 2021 with a new yet familiar head coach. David Todd, who has been with the program since 2018, will make his head coaching debut for the Sailors today at Newport Harbor High School against Beckman.

“It’s been a up and down kind of fall and winter, but now that things are completely open, I’m probably going to have to hold back some tears when that first whistle’s blown just for the fact that all the stuff that happened last year in our lockdown with the best team we’ve ever had,” Todd said.

Last season, the Sailors went 3-1 before the season was cut short to the coronavirus pandemic. Some could argue and say that the graduated class of 2020 was as talented as any Newport Harbor class preceding it. Certainly the loss of graduated players Rhett Farmer, reigning NEC Rookie of the Week Aidan Goltz and Garrett Rovazzini and others leaves some gaps for this year’s squad to fill.

“What we’re trying to do now is that we’re trying to squeeze that coal as hard as possible and make little diamonds on our team,” Todd said. “We have a really good crop of freshman that have come in that are showing real promise.”

The Sailors’ captains will be Luke Barnes, Will Patterson, Jerome Snyder, Troy Kennedy, Charlie Durante and Brycen MacBeth. In addition to playing lacrosse, Barnes will be playing basketball as well.

“Now that they [lacrosse and basketball] are pushed into the same season I’m having two practices every single day as well as some games that overlap each other,” Barnes said. “The most important thing that I need to do is to manage my time correctly and always have a schedule planned out.”

Other players on Newport Harbor’s boys lacrosse team will be playing football as well as lacrosse for the thirst five weeks of the lacrosse season. Todd is excited at the fact that his players are dual-sport athletes.

“I told them, ‘look, you have an opportunity to be a Bo Jackson, you have an opportunity to be a Deion Sanders – a dual-sport athlete,'” Todd said. “Growing up, I would’ve cherished this, being able to football one day and being able to play lacrosse the next day would’ve been pure heaven for me, and I hope it’s pure heaven for heaven for these boys too.”

Just like Todd’s older brother Mark did when he was the boys lacrosse coach at Newport Harbor High, the Sailors’ schedule has some tough and challenging games. According to David, his team is looking forward to away games at Mater Dei (3/17) and Foothill (4/7) and their Sunset League games.

Barnes is looking forward to playing Corona Del Mar (at CdM) on May 7.

“Being on the [Newport Harbor] team that beat them [CdM] my sophomore year and snapped our drought of losing to them was one of my favorite lacrosse memories ever and I hope to repeat that again this year,” Barnes said.

Despite having gotten hit hard in terms of graduation and having a new head coach, Barnes is excited for the season to start and to able to be coached by Todd.

“Our team has a great next man up mentality. We were lucky enough to have such a great class last year that really showed our now current seniors how to lead and how to be a championship caliber team and me and my fellow captains hope to do the same thing that they did and lead our team,” Barnes said. “To be able to play lacrosse again is truly amazing. Only getting a 4 game season last year with the team we had was definitely frustrating to say the least, but on the brighter side of things to be able to have my senior season at all is a blessing.”

Newport Harbor opens up the season today at Davidson against Beckman at noon. Today’s game will be streamed here. TarTV – YouTube
