Placentia, April 14 – Newport Harbor returned to form after the spring recess and pushed their Sunset SE record to 4-0, drawing the first half of league play to a close, with a 13-6 victory over El Dorado. El Dorado came out swinging, as star midfielder Celeste DeLeon snagged the opening draw, marched past the NHHS defense, and ripped a shot to put the Golden Hawks up 1-0. The Sailors answered 40 seconds later, as Brittany McCoy fed a hard-cutting Daniela Vazquez, who netted the equalizer—one of her three goals of the evening. As the half wore on, visiting Newport took control of the transition and found ways around first team all-league Hawk Goalie, Sofia Naumovski, who had a several stone-cold stuffs on strong Sailor attacks. At the half, Newport was up, 8-3. El Dorado made their adjustments, and the second half played out fairly evenly. The NHHS defense, anchored by seniors Mia Bagiu, Erin O’Connor, and goalie Montana Mattox, would not open the door to a comeback. Nine different players found the back of the net for Newport Harbor; scoring their first varsity goals were Lauren Bibb (on a bold, slashing drive) and Carlye Lenk (from a feed off a smart cut). Up next, on Thursday, April 16: El Dorado hosts Yorba Linda and Newport Harbor hosts Valencia.
