Coming off losses last week to Thousand Oaks and Agoura, No. 15 Newbury Park wasted little time pouncing on Palisades and cruising to a 14-10 nonleague victory.
It’s the first win over a Top 10 team this season for the Panthers (4-8), who had lost six previous games against teams currently in the Top 10 of the coaches poll. Palisades moved into the No. 10 position in this week’s voting.
Palisades (9-5) also provided Newbury an opening, with three starters absent due to illness and two others sitting out the first quarter for disciplinary reasons. The Panthers took full advantage, jumping out to a 5-1 lead after one quarter and 9-3 at halftime. They extended the lead to 13-6 after three quarters before Palisades managed to make it respectable.
JT Shoop led Newbury Park with six goals.
Palisades now must brace for a visit Saturday from No. 5 Oak Park, which has won seven in a row. Newbury plays today at home against Calabasas and is at No. 6 Westlake on Friday.
