Big First Half Propels Murrieta Mesa Past Newport Harbor

No. 16 Murrieta Mesa continued their push for a higher ranking by defeating Newport Harbor on Saturday 18-7. The win extends the Murrieta Mesa winning streak to six consecutive games and pushes their season record against Sunset League teams to 2-1. The Rams defeated Los Alamitos 8-4 and fell to Huntington Beach 8-6 earlier in the season.

Newport Harbor came out of the gates quickly scoring the first goal of the game on a fast break. That would be the only lead of the game for the Sailors and it would not last long. Austin Sandvig (2 goals) responded and started a 12-2 run that sent the Rams into the intermission with a commanding 13-3 lead. The scoring pace slowed down in the second half as Murrieta Mesa cruised to the 18-7 final score.

Cameron Bentley (4g, 1 assist) lead all scorers with five points. Preston Jaurequi also had a four-goal game. Derek Daquino (2g, 1a) Jacob Ray (2g, 1a), Josh Crisler (2g), Mitch Papa (2g) and Sandvig rounded out the Murrieta Mesa scoring.

Ray won 22 of 28 faceoffs to keep the Rams in control of possession. Justus Romo had 12 saves to keep the Sailors at a comfortable distance.

Next game for Murrieta Mesa (4-0, 12-3) is Tuesday at Mira Costa (2-0, 10-3). Newport Harbor (1-4, 3-10) hosts Edison (4-0, 10-3) on Wednesday.
