St. Margaret’s was unable to hold on to a 6-3 halftime lead in their annual game against Mt. St. Joseph’s of Maryland. The Gaels held the Tartans to one goal in the second half, and won the game 8-7 in overtime on Drew Harrison’s (Maryland) fourth goal of the game.
Defense was the silver lining around the Tartans’ cloud. Despite winning only 6 of 19 faceoffs, the Tartans held an offense that is led by Harrison and Bryan Costabile (Notre Dame), the number 6 Inside Lacrosse Young Gun to single digits . Payton Fales (No. 4 above) made 15 saves to anchor the defense.
Kevin Groeninger had his second consecutive hat trick. Nick Shanks (2g, 1a) picked up three points. Samuel Harnisch (1g, 1a) and Conrad Hampson (1g, 1a) also scored for the Tartans. In addition to Harrison’s four goals, Costabile scored two, and freshman Bryan Shaw (Maryland) and Chris Kosiba scored one apiece.
Next up; St. Margaret’s (6-4) travels to Colorado, where they will play Regis Jesuit, the no. 2 team in the west on Thursday and N. Fort Collins Unified on Friday.
