No. 11 Mira Costa seems to be making a habit of making things close. Tuesday, the Mustangs surrendered a three-goal lead but recovered late to beat visiting Santiago in overtime on a goal from Zach Horowitz.
It was the third consecutive one-goal decision for Mira Costa and second time in a row the Mustangs have held on to win after surrendering a lead late in the game. Friday, El Segundo rallied from a 10-5 deficit to lead 11-10 early in the third quarter, but the Mustangs wound up winning 13-12. Earlier last week, it was the Mustangs who rallied, pulling within one at Crespi before the comeback came up short.
Tuesday, Mira Costa (3-1) led 4-1 after one period, only to have Santiago (1-3) pull within one at halftime, 6-5. The Mustangs again extended their cushion, though, leading 8-5 heading to the fourth quarter.
The Sharks rallied, though, tying the score 8-8 with 1:17 left and forcing the overtime.
Mira Costa plays host to Santa Monica on Thursday at 3 p.m. The Vikings (4-0) are unranked, sitting just outside the Top 20, but are averaging 17.5 goals per game.
