A quartet of Rip City alumni led No. 17 Cal State Fullerton to a 14-8 victory over visiting University of San Diego on Saturday. Former Huntington Beach High School teammates Micah Willis and Alex Kowalski scored four goals apiece, and former El Toro High School teammates Spencer Core and Jason Hastings scored two goals apiece. All four played for head coach Mike Ansel’s Rip City before matriculating to Fullerton. USD’s Garrett Parsons, pictured above defending Willis, is also a member of the Rip City alumni club.
The Titans jumped out to a 5-1 first quarter lead and never looked back. The Toreros got as close as 7-4 by halftime, but never pressured the Titans any more than that. Willis finished the game with seven points (4g,1a) and Kowalski dished out one assist to bring his total to five points. LSM Blake Hoebel, an Esperanza alum, won 75% of the faceoffs and added goal. Hoebel is a transfer from Colorado Mesa.
Aidan Kennedy led the Torero offense with a hat trick. Drew Harvey, Brandon Rausch, Weston Preising, and Husani Whitlock all added single goals. Rausch also recovered four groundballs.
Fullerton (7-2; 4-0) is in first place in the Southwest Lacrosse Conference Division 2 North. USD (3-6; 1-1) is in fourth place in SLC Division 2 South behind Concordia, CSU-San Marcos and CSU-Long Beach. The Toreros control their own destiny to the playoffs with games against SLC South rivals UCI, Long Beach, and UCSD remaining. If they can get past those three teams, a first round playoff rematch with Fullerton likely awaits.
