Mater Dei senior defenseman Antonio Shepard has verbally committed to study and play NCAA Division 3 lacrosse at Whittier College according to Devin Arkison of LockdownD Training and Recruiting.
“I had a meeting early on for a couple hours with coach Marks (Whittier head coach) and I knew then it was probably the place for me”, Shepard told Arkison. “Once I met the other coaches and learned about the outstanding academics and met the players I was sure.”
Shepard transferred to Mater Dei for his junior season after two seasons at Esperanza. Shepard thrived under coach Johnny Rodriguez last season, and Rodriguez says he Shepard has the right stuff to continue to thrive at the next level.
“Antonio has the work ethic to succeed and thrive at the college level,” Rodriguez said by email. “He leads by example and loves to compete. The lumber he throws at 6’1 and 215 pounds will make for an intimidating match up for any attackman. Whittier is a perfect fit him.”
Shepard received interest from several D2 and D3 colleges and ended up deciding Whittier was the best fit. Arkison agrees that he made the right choice.
“I’m thrilled for Antonio and his family”, Arkison said. “Whittier is going to be a rockstar program here on the west coast, there is no doubt in my mind, a national D3 ranking is just around the corner.”
Shepard wanted to thank his MD coaches and teammates as well as his family and friends for all their support.
