The Mater Dei boys lacrosse team cruised to a comfortable 16-3 over St. John Bosco on Monday night to improve their season record to 11-1. The goals came early and often for the Monarchs, who built a 6-0 lead after the first quarter and never looked back.
The Monarchs overwhelmed the Bosco defense with their vast array of offensive weapons and unselfish play. Eight different Monarchs scored goals and 15 of their 16 goals came off of assists. Grant Portillo led all scorers with four goals. Lucas de la Paz, Kyle Waterman , Rowan Piani, and John McPherson all scored a pair. Sean Sanchez, Ryan Stiller, Adam Horcasitas, and Cole Crisostomo scored a goal apiece.
The Monarchs played outstanding defense, particularly in the midfield, to stifle Bosco’s attempts to set up their offense. Samari Staten, Aiden Fischbein, Evan Curry (7 gb), and Maclaine Cantrell (6gb) applied intense pressure throughout the game to cause turnovers and leave the Braves empty handed on many of their possessions. On a relatively quiet night for the close defense, Tej Gadhavi led the charge for the Monarch’s defense with some disruptive checks and goalie Nick Colignon added 8 saves.
The 11-1 Monarch’s next match up is Tuesday night vs. Santiago at Mater Dei.
