Mater Dei continued its undefeated march through the Trinity League on Wednesday night with another dominant win, this time over the outgunned Servite Friars, 19-2. The Monarchs have outscored their opponents at staggering 89 – 6 during its last 5 game stretch. The match up with the Friars was a mirror image of the previous games, with Mater Dei controlling time of possession with outstanding faceoff and midfield play, patient and effective passing on offense and a stifling defense, coupled with stout goaltending. Mater Dei improved to 15-1 on the season.
It was Senior night for the Monarchs and the team held a pre-game celebration to honor their four graduating seniors: Kyle Waterman, Dominic Galuppo, Tyler Curry and Tommy Bethel. Bethel added some icing to his celebratory cake, leading Mater Dei’s scoring efforts with 3 goals and an assist. Nine players scored in total for the Monarchs, with Nate Chu (Jr.) and Evan Curry (So.) each adding 3 goals; Rowan Piani (Jr.), Triston Jewell (So.), Ryan Stiller (So.) and Cole Crisostomo (So.) all added 2 goals; and Conner Dettloff (Jr.) and John McPherson (Jr.) rounded out the scoring with a goal each. Crisostomo also led the team with 3 assists.
Lucas de la Paz (Jr.) increased his mind-blowing season faceoff win percentage (87%), winning 15 of 16 faceoffs, while Maclaine Cantrell (Fr.) kept his faceoff streak going with 21 in a row, with a 9 for 9 evening. With the Monarchs in control of the ball most of the game, it made for a quiet day for the defense enabling goalie Nick Colignon (Jr.) to limit the flailing Friars to just 2 goals, and 5 saves for the goaltender.
The 15-1 Monarchs’ next match up is Saturday at Santa Margarita to close out their Trinity League schedule.
