The Monarchs of Mater Dei woke up Wednesday morning sitting on top of the Laxpower.com Southern Section Ratings. On Wednesday afternoon, the Monarchs played like they’d like to stay there for awhile. Behind Mackenzie Wallevand (Fresno State) who had five goals, and Maddie Hooks and Lauren Gonzalez, who scored three apiece, the Monarchs defeated a talented Newport Harbor team 15-4.
Grace Houser controlled the draws and the midfield for Mater Dei. However, Newport was able to generate a number of goal-scoring opportunities and free positions that were answered admirably by the Mater Dei goalie platoon of Brianna Barriga and Courtney Walburger (67% save percentage on the night). And while the athletic Mater Dei showed dominance in the fast break, the Sailors’ settled D held fast against the top team all night. Newport goalie Montana Mattox saved a baker’s dozen, while attacker Daniela Vazquez scored two. Andie Piovesan and Rylie Siegfried each added a tally, while Mia Bagiu and Katie Hendrix both snagged three draw controls.
Next up, on April 14: Mater Dei hosts Los Alamitos and Newport Harbor resumes league play at El Dorado.
