The St. Margaret’s Lady Tartans fought back from an early deficit vs. Mater Dei on Tuesday, but the Lady Monarchs played hard and hung on to end the game with a 14-12 win in an exciting and competitive game. Mater Dei went up early 4-1, but the Lady Tartansresponded to make it 7-5 at half. SMES made changes defensively to adjust
how they covered cuts from the elbow and offensively by setting up one versus one challenges to goal.
The second half was back and forth with Mater Dei and St. Margart’s evened the score at 12-12. Mater Dei took the lead 13-12 with 3:50 left. St. Margaret’s fought every second of the game, but struggled to maintain their high level of energy with eight of twelve girls playing the entire 50-minute game. Mater Dei possessed the ball for the last 1:45 to finish the game 14-12. Coach Holly Reilly said “It was the highest level of play the SMES girls have executed, and minor adjustments in defending against a stall and understanding clock management will be learning lessons moving forward.”
Mater Dei improved to 4-2 with the win and will be working hard at practice to get ready for a game Friday against undefeated Capo Valley. Next up for St. Margaret’s is a game against 1-4 Rosary on Thursday.
