Maryland to Face North Carolina in OC March 21

Two of the nation’s top men’s lacrosse programs will bring top-notch college lacrosse to Southern California when Maryland faces North Carolina at Santa Ana Stadium on Saturday, March 21, 2015. The 2015 Pacific Coast Shootout is the brainchild of Corona del Mar High head coach GW Mix, whose marketing company, The Cheetah Group Inc., debuted the event last year and featured Notre Dame vs. Denver in a game featuring several players from Orange County on the rosters (including Mix’s son Ryan, then a senior attack man for Notre Dame). caught up with Mix and asked him about this year’s event:

MaxLaxOC: Last year you brought us ND-Denver. Now Md-UNC. How are you able to attract such great teams, and what is your ambition with the PCS?

GW Mix: I spent a number of years coaching the game at its highest levels [Mix was the head coach at Franklin & Marshall College from 1988-1990, UPenn from 1991-1994 and later was head coach and General Manager of the pro lacrosse LA Riptide in 2006]. Many of the top coaches are good friends, former colleagues or former assistant coaches of mine. Playing a game on the West Coast, in good weather, in front of a great crowd early in the season is very attractive to these guys.

The main purpose of the Shootout is to “Show the Game” in an effort to “Grow the Game.” We really believe the best way to enhance the quality of lacrosse on the West Coast is to expose the players, coaches, referees and fans to the game at its highest level. The only effective way to do that is to invest the money to bring two of the top Division I teams out here to play a regular season game and hope our lacrosse community supports it.

ML: How many fans attended last year’s ND-Denver game?

Mix: Last year, we had over 5,800 at the game. As a result, we decided to move the game to a larger venue (Santa Ana Stadium). We are excited about the new location. It will provide Shootout fans with a great game day experience.

ML: When will tickets be made available for purchase, and what will they cost?

Mix: Tickets will go on sale Wednesday, January 7 on our website and will range from $20-$35.

ML: Will you also feature other games during the PCS featuring local college teams?

Mix: At this point, no. We feel one major game is enough and allows our fan base to play their own games that day and get to the Shootout without missing anything.
