Loyola Takes Over Top Spot In Coaches Poll

Last week, Loyola gained ground on preseason No. 1 Palos Verdes in the U.S. Lacrosse/MaxLaxLA coaches poll. This week, the Cubs have taken over the top spot. With nine first place votes to Palos Verdes’ five, Loyola was voted the No. 1 team in the L.A. division after the second full week of play.

The Cubs (6-0) went 3-0 on the week, winning at then-No. 3 Harvard Westlake 16-10, beating St. Francis 18-2, then squeaking past then-No. 6 Thousand Oaks 7-6 in overtime on Saturday.

Palos Verdes (1-1), meanwhile, opened March 9 with a 13-12 overtime win at Crespi, then followed up Saturday with an 11-8 home loss to St. Margaret’s Episcopal, the No. 5 team in Orange County.

Thousand Oaks (2-1) was rewarded for taking Loyola to OT, moving up from No. 6 to No. 4, and Crespi (2-3) moved up from No. 10 to No. 7 after taking PV to OT, then beating Oak Park 13-9 Friday night.

The biggest move in the poll, though, was made by Sierra Canyon (5-0), which debuted at No. 16 after two overtime victories last week.
