Los Alamitos Girls Win US Lacrosse Southern Section Championship Title

Los-Al-Thumb.jpegThe Los Alamitos High School girls’ lacrosse team defeated Oak Park on Saturday to earn a 6th consecutive US Lacrosse Southern Section Championship title, defeating the Eagles by a score of 20-6.

Los Alamitos was scheduled to play Agoura, who beat Oak Park last week by 1 point in double overtime to become the Northern Division Champions. Agoura chose to forfeit their title and not play in Saturday morning’s game because they could not field a team when their eight seniors decided to go to prom instead of playing.

Saturday’s game began with Los Alamitos playing a bit sloppy and Oak Park taking a 2-1 lead in the first seven minutes. Los Alamitos Head Coach Emily Mukai called a time out. When the teams returned to the field, it was business as usual for Los Alamitos and they tied the score just 40 seconds later. The Lady Griffins proceeded to score 12 consecutive goals in 13 minutes, including two goals spaced only 9 seconds apart.  The Griffins effectively controlled the draw, skillfully passed the ball, and shot on goal with precision. Los Al built such a large lead that a running clock was prompted before the first half ended to keep the score down.

The second half of the game saw Los Alamitos continuing to dominate the game as the entire Griffin bench got into the game and contributed to the Los Alamtos seventh consecutive win this season.

Most of the Griffin starting line up has played together since 5th and 6th grade on the Beach Cities club team, giving them a strong sense of chemistry.  They played off each other’s strengths, capitalized on opportunities, and played effectively as a team to get the job done.

The Griffins 15-6 record for the season is a bit deceptive as they played the hardest schedule of any team in Southern California, with quality wins against Texas State Champion, St John’s, Colorado State Champion, Cherry Creek, and the two top teams in San Diego, Coronado and La Costa Canyon.

This year’s seniors, who make up nearly the entire starting line up have amassed 71 wins and only 12 losses over the past four seasons.  They have won Southern Section Championships for each season of their high school careers.

Congratulations to the 2014 Los Alamitos Griffins, your Southern Section Girls’ Lacrosse CHAMPIONS!
