Chapman University and Concordia University kept their dreams for National Championships alive on Monday by advancing to today’s quarterfinal round at UCI. In the Division 1 bracket, Huntington Beach alum Steve Koressel ( 2 goals, 3 assists) led Chapman to a 16-2 victory over Michigan State 16-2 to set up a quarterfinal date with No. 12 Stanford tonight at 6:45 at UCI Field 4. Tyler Standley (Denver, CO) had a hat trick for the Panthers and Gus Gradinger (Monte Vista High School) had 7 saves.
Concordia the top seed in Division 2 fell behind early to No. 16 Briarcliffe (Bethpage, NY) but came roaring back to claim a 16-11 victory. Great Oak alum Dillon Bernard, a junior attack led the Eagles with six points (4 goals, 2 assists). Senior captian Josh Fagan (Victoria BC) had three goals and an assist. Cody Cook (Victoria, BC) came up big with 11 saves. The Eagles play No. 8 St. John’s (Collegeville, MN) today at 4:00 pm at UCI Field 1. St. John’s, an at-large qualifier, from the Upper Midwest Lacrosse Conference, has a 10-6 record.
Tenth-seeded Cal State Fullerton was not so fortunate as they were edged by No. 7 Florida Gulf Coast, bringing an end to a 15-3 campaing. As usual the Titans were led by local talent. Alex Kowalski (Huntington Beach) and Evan Purpura (Servite) scored two goals apiece. Chris Laurino (El Toro) had seven saves. The young Titans will lose only three seniors to graduation and are rumored to have a strong incoming class including a transfer or two to shore up their defense, giving them much optimism for next year.
