Corona del Mar High School, the No. 2 team in Orange County and No. 5 team in the West,beat La Costa Canyon 8-6 on Wednesday night for their second win against a San Diego County power this season. The Sea Kings beat Torrey Pines 13-4 on April 3, and on Wednesday night it was the Maverick’s turn to give it a go against a team that is allowing only 1.5 goals per game while scoring 13 per game.
The Mavericks, led by an outstanding performance from goalie Ben Fredericks, were able to keep the game close but like their ten predecessors came out with the lower score agains the Sea Kings. Jack Keen led the Mavericks with two goals. Jason Mummau (1g, 1a) Dino Renna (1g), Jack Keen (1g), and Mike Rice (1a) also tallied points for the Mavericks. Fredericks had a number of highlight saves while becoming the first goalie to hold the Sea Kings to single digits this season.
Corona del Mar improved to 11-0 the win. Senior Max Kline (3 goals, 1 assist) and junior Jordan Greenhall (3g, 3a) led the Sea Kings’ scoring. Seniors Nino Chavez and Ben Palitz split the other two CdM goals. Junior Jason Simaan won 16 of 17 faceoffs. Seniors Hoyt Crance (7 saves) including several of the highlight variety, Brian Leguay (3 groundballs), Hugh Crance (1gb) and Sherwin Gersten (1gb) lead a staunch defensive effort that was punctuated by holding the Mavericks scoreless while two men down during a key sequence late in the game.
