Junior Kyler Konjoyan and senior Griffin Rodas sparked high-scoring Village Christian to a 20-7 win over visiting Royal on Wednesday, the Crusaders’ sixth consecutive win in their first game since returning from a two-week spring break.
After a tight first half that saw Village lead only 6-3 at the break, the Crusaders erupted for nine goals in the third period, then blanked the Highlanders 5-0 in the fourth to win going away.
While the offense was eye-opening for the Crusaders (8-2), much of the credit for this one goes to the specialists. Sophomore face-off middie Matthew Walz won 22 of 27 draws, keeping the ball in the hands of Village’s scorers. When Royal (3-5) did possess, Crusaders’ junior goalie Jacob Zinder was stout in goal, making 15 saves.
All of that led to plenty of opportunities for Konjoyan (6 goals), Rodas (5g, 4a) and the rest of the Villas Christian offense. Senior Harrison Woo (3g), freshman Donovan Rodas (2g, 1a), Walz (1g, 2a) and sophomore Miles Chun (1g, 1a) each contributed multiple points.
