No. 3 JSerra Catholic High School made strides towards a second consecutive Trinity League title with a come from behind victory over No. 5 Santa Margarita on Tuesday. In a classic confrontation of contrasting playing styles, the Eagles controlled the tempo early with long possessions that had them up 8-3 early in the second half. At that point, the Lions started to assert the freewheeling fast-paced offense that they are more comfortable with, and went on the 9-3 run that gave them the win.
In a story within the story, two of the County’s top offensive players, JSerra’s James Yanes (Hofstra) and Santa Margarita’s Nico Houser (Wagner), lead all scorers with six goals and five goals, respectively. Logan Olmsted (2 goals, 2 assists), Jake Schleppy (1g, 1a), Matt Karzak (1g), Yuta Murata (1g) and Josh Sanchez also scored for the Lions. Beau Largent made 13 saves including five in the crucial fourth quarter. Kennedy Solomon (5 groundballs) and Nick Georgagi (3 GBs) led the defense.
In addition to Houser’s five goals, Zach Taylor had a hat trick and an assist, Andrew Kofoed (Notre Dame de Namur) scored a goal, and Quintin Buchman continued his impressive freshman campaign with two goals and an assist. Billy Senecal did his part by winning 14 of 20 faceoffs. Defensive middies Michael Flint and Lucas Mullarkey picked up 5 GBs and 4 GBs, respectively.
Next up: J Serra (7-0; 1-0) travels to the Tustin High School stadium to play No. 1 Foothill on Thursday. Santa Margarita (6-3; 0-1) hosts red hot Servite (4-5; 0-0 on Thursday).
