JSerra Edges Bishops

The JSerra Lions spent Spring Break conquering lacrosse territories north of the Orange County border. Now that school is back in session, they have turned their sights to the south.  Thursday, the Bishop’s School (La Jolla) took a jaunt up the I-5 to open their season, and participate in the first of several highly anticipated OC-San Diego showdowns scheduled for this season. In a high-paced, competitive game, the Pride kept their perfect record intact with a come from behind 11-9 win.

The action started with Mitch Kingsley finding the back of the net followed by a goal from Gage Manning off a feed from James Yanes. The Knights would battle back to end the quarter tied at 2-2. During the second quarter each team took turns getting into the action with Logan Olmstead and Brenden Lynch each finding the back of the net to give the Pride a 5-4 halftime lead.

Bishop’s caught JSerra by surprise with a 5 goal surge to open the second half, the first coming on an EMO situation, Bishop’s struck with 5 unanswered goals and the Pride found themselves in their first real deficit of the season thus far. Down 9-5 halfway through the third period, the veteran JSerra squad did not push the panic button and instead started chipping away at the lead. With 5:29 left in the 3rd, Kingsley found Yanes twice in just over a minute to close the gap by 2 and the 3rd quarter with 9-7 on the board. The Pride defense would deny the Knights the entire 4th quarter giving the offense some room to put 4 more goals up for the 11-9 win.

Jake Henigman had 9 saves for JSerra. Kingsley led the Pride offense with 7 points (4 goals, 3 assists). Logan Olmsted, who was celebrating his recent verbal commitment to Colorado Mesa, Lynch, and Yanes (2 goals, 1 assist) all had 2-goal nights. Manning’s goal rounded out the scoring.

The Lions head south Friday when they take on the Islanders of Coronado at 7:00 p.m. while the Knights stay in town to face Tesoro Friday night.
