JSerra coach Kyle Harrison has his young Lion squad believing. This week, they have upset wins over #5 Santa Margarita, and now #3 St. Margaret’s. This team, composed of
mostly freshman and sophomores, put together a very challenging non-league schedule for the 2012 season, second only to Foothill. That difficulty of schedule seems to be paying off for the Lions, now 3-0 in Trinity league play.
The Tartans were the visiting team at JSerra Thursday night, a game that was critical in Trinity league play. St. Margaret’s took control of the game, going up 2-0 in the first quarter with goals by Hunter Edington and Kent Izuka. Chase Williams scored at the start of the second quarter, putting the Tartans well in control with a 3-0 lead. Eight minutes into the 2nd quarter, the Lions offense came alive as Christen Spenser scored on a dodge from behind cage. On the ensuing faceoff, Ryan Harnisch won the faceoff, flicking it to himself, dished it to James Yanes who scored from 10 yards out, bringing the Lions to within one. The Tartans answered with a score by Matt Duenes with 5:17 left in the second quarter to make the score 4-2. JSerra’s Cole Schleppy and Brenden Lynch added goals in the 2nd quarter to tie the score at 4-4. Duenes scored another goal just as the 1st half expired,
putting St. Margaret’s up, 5-4.
That was the last time the Tartans would score. The Lions defense (Goalie Ryan Suttle, Troy Janikowski, Chaz Dotson, Kennedy Solomon, Nick Georgagi, Teddy Finley, Chris Bederovand Tucker Guyot) again stepped up big as they held St. Margarets to a scoreless second half. JSerra’s Mitch Kingsley and Brenden Lynch added goals in the 3rd and 4th quarters to secure a 6-5 win for the Lions.
