Houser Helps Mater Dei Past Foothill

Mater Dei High School and Foothill High School have been sitting on top of the computer ratings for a good part of the season.  The two teams met for the second time this season on Thursday.  Foothill took the first meeting, en route to a Surf, Sun & Stix Lacrosse Tournament championship in mid March.

In spite of Foothill’s 8-0 record entering the game and Foothill’s advantage in head-to-head competition, Mater Dei was ranked No. 1 by and Foothill No. 2.  Thus, Mater Dei needed a win to keep their position, and led by Grace Houser’s five goals and Lauren Gonzales’ three, the Monarchs outlasted the Knights 9-7.  Julia Taylor had four goals to lead Foothill.  Courtney Walburger had 11 saves for the Monarchs. Hannah Upshaw had eight for the Knights.

The Monarchs win ties the season series at one apiece, and although Los Al, Beckman, and a few others will have something to say about it,  sets up a potential rubber match in mid May.

Next up: Mater Dei (10-3) travels to Westview (4-5).  Foothill (8-1) also travels to San Diego County on Saturday where they will play La Costa Canyon (11-2).
