Harvard Westlake’s 13-12 overtime win over Loyola on Saturday convinced most voters in the US Lacrosse/MaxLaxLA coaches poll to jump the Wolverines ahead of the Cubs and into the No. 1 spot … but not all voters.
Five voters still listed Loyola (7-2) at No. 1, a spot the Cubs have held since the preseason, despite Saturday’s loss. Perhaps those voters are giving Loyola something of a pass for taking the Wolverines (8-0) to overtime despite missing two starters, or perhaps voters still are giving the Cubs the benefit of the doubt based on their win over Foothill and close loss at Torrey Pines. Whatever the reason, Saturday’s result has given all the voters plenty to consider when filling out their ballots.
In fact, one ballot even jumped Palos Verdes (5-2) into the No. 1 spot, followed by Loyola and Harvard Westlake. But the majority of ballots listed the top three teams as Harvard Westlake, Loyola and PV, and that’s how the averages fell when all was said and done.
Oak Park (7-2) and Agoura (7-2) swapped spots, with the Eagles moving up to No. 4 and the Chargers dropping to No. 5. Newbury Park (7-1) and Oaks Christian (6-2) did the same, with the Panthers moving up to No. 7 and the Lions dropping to No. 8. Thousand Oaks (5-3) stood pat in the middle of that Conejo Valley and Marmonte League shuffle, remaining at No. 6. Westlake (2-3) lost twice and slipped from No. 9 to No. 10, with Chaminade (5-3) moving up one spot to No. 9.
There was only minor movement in the rest of the poll, most notably West Ranch (4-5) slipping one spot to No. 15 after Friday’s double-overtime loss at El Segundo — but remaining ahead of the No. 16 Eagles (6-2).
