Harnisch’s FIve Not Enough for St. Margaret’s

St. Margaret’s continued their tour of the the Regional Top 10 with a trip to Torrey Pines Wednesday night.  The Falcons are ranked no. 3 in the West by the Under Armour/Inside Lacrosse Regional Experts’ Poll. Samuel Harnisch led all scorers with five goals and one assist but it was not enough as the Tartans gave up their highest point total of the season and fell 15-11.  It was the Tartans’  fourth loss in as many outings against Regional Top 10 teams this season.

The game started out well for the Tartans.  After falling behind 1-0, a pair of goals by Harnisch and one by Kevin Groeninger (2g,2a) gave St. Margarets a 3-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.  Josh Sherman (4g; Ohio Wesleyan) scored the first two of his four goals for the Falcons.

The Torrey Pines defense clamped down at the same time their offense picked up steam to claim a 7-5 halftime lead that they would not relinquish.  Harnisch and Nick Shanks (2g) tallied for the Tartans but it was not enough to match the Falcons’ five goal output. Freshman Alex Pistorious, senior captain Ara Suhadolink (4g), Sherman, and Zac Friedland (Georgetown) scored the Torrey Pines goals.

Both teams came out firing with the Tartans’ offense giving their best performance of the game, scoring five goals on just eight shots.  Harnisch and Kevin Cox (2g, 1a) both finished twice and Groeninger added his second goal of the game.  The Falcons kept pace though with two goals from Ethan Egan (Bucknell) and one apiece from Marc Lefferdink, Suhadolink and Sherman to give Torrey Pines a 12-10 lead with 12 minutes to play.

Torrey Pines continued to pressure the Tartans in the fourth and Suhadolink’s fourth paired with two from Lefferdink gave them the 15-11 victory.  Shanks scored the only Tartans’ goal of the quarter.

Next up: St. Margaret’s (7-6) hosts Cathedral Catholic (6-7) on Tuesday and then finishes up the season with two more Regional Top 10 teams from San Diego: Poway on April 23 and La Costa Canyon on April 26.  Torrey Pines (10-1) plays Regional n0. 10 La Costa Canyon on Friday.
