Early season match up this week in Yorba Linda as the Mustangs hosted Servite. The YL squad came out hot and never looked back. Sharp stickwork and tough defense carried coach Schreiber’s squad to the 10-4 victory.
Yorba Linda jumped out to a 4-0 lead after Q1 and over the next 3Q’s extended that to 10-0 before a gritty Servite squad rallied to cut it to the final score of 10-4.
Senior attackman Blake Hardison looked super sharp for the Mustangs. He had 3 goals on the night. His crafty off ball play helped establish the 4-0 lead. Brock Melanson and Blake Stewart were excellent dodging from up top to create a slide and Hardison had some nice catch and shoot opportunities by finding holes in the defense.
Melanson had one goal and two assists while Stuart had one goal and three assists. Middies did much of the heavy lifting as far as creating offense for the Mustangs. Defensively YL pitched a shut of through 3q’s. Freshman Morgan Kroenbush got the start in his first game but didn’t look much like a freshman. Big boy looked good both on ball defense as well as off ball on slides.
Servite to their credit did not quit at any point and scored 4 straight in Q4 with tallies by Nick Shannon, Matt Greenlee and a pair of goals by Mcvay.
Coach O’Leary’s squad played hard to the final whistle. Defensively, senior Nick Sheremetta was very good in his 1 vs 1 match up. He’s a legit cover guy and Hardison for YL can play. Sheremetta had 5 CTO’s, several groundballs, and created numerous transition opportunities that will most likely be turned into points later in the season when the sticks are sharper.
Up next for Yorba Linda will be San Clemente in a north OC vs South OC match up.
