Grandview Upsets Columbine Round

Round 1 in the 5A boys lacrosse tournament went pretty much to plan except #12 Grandview upset #5 Columbine 14-10.  The game was tight into the 3rd quarter when Grandview took a 7-5 lead behind goals from Matt Sciba and Josh Melton.  They will face #4 Cherry Creek who   defeated #13 Chaparral 10-6.  #9 Rock Canyon avenged an earlier loss to #8 Colorado Academy winning 6-5 to advance to the second round against #1 Regis, 11-0 winners over Legend.  The two most anticipated games didn’t provide an upset but did provide for some entertaining lacrosse.  #6 Mullen outlasted #11 Wheat Ridge 10-8 to advance to play #3 Arapahoe who struggled early with #14 Kent but put them away in the second half to win 12-6.  #7 Monarch had their hands full with #10 Palmer until they were able to pull away in the fourth quarter on a herculean effort by Chad Kruezer who was all over the field winning face-offs, playing defense, and scoring on a man down situation.  Monarch won 13-9 behind 4 goals each from Andrew Zwiers and Jared Hodell.  #7 Monarch advances to play #2 Mountain Vista who cruised past #15 Denver East 15-4.  All second round games will be played Saturday at Legacy Stadium.
